Mask Parade!

Parading through the halls at Washington Elementary, Ms. Carradus’ fourth grade art students presented their artistic creations to classrooms on February 29th and March 1st and 7th.  The project started with students looking at and discussing the masks of other cultures. They watched a video on mask traditions in Mexico and talked about how masks help tell Mexican history. Ideas that students sketched portrayed something from their own personal history. With a plan in mind, students constructed a base using papier mache over a mask mold. By attaching cardboard forms, students individualized their masks to make animals, monsters, people, and other characters. Next, they added additional layers of papier mache to strengthen the forms. After painting the masks with acrylic paint, students embellished their masks with feathers, glitter, pom-poms, pipe cleaners and yarn. All the hard work paid off when fourth grade students wowed the other grades with their parade performance. Students invented movements that embodied their characters and stalked, hopped, juggled, and crept around the classrooms.

Here is a photo and video of Mrs. Hanshaw's fourth grade class on their mask parade. Students made up their own movements to show the character of their mask.

Mask Parade!

Fourth grade students finished their masks and went on a parade around the school. Check out how Mrs. Buckley's class acts out the characters of their masks by using movements.
